October in Stockholm is magical, not least because we gain a precious hour on the 28th, when daylight saving ends. Plus there’s some fantastic festivals to cheer you up: beer and chocolate – who could ask for more? Here’s our super seven things to do in October.
The Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival with Taste Experience
An event for the conoisseur! When you come to the festival, you get tasting glasses that are included in the admission price. You can then go to various lectures about food and drink from leading experts, as well as buying tastings from the different stalls. A tasting will cost from 10 SEK and up, depending on the quality of the product. Note that you can only pay with cash.

Chocolate Festival 12-14 October 2012
For the 10th time – the grand hall in the museum has become a meeting place for chocolate lovers for one delicious weekend in the middle of October. The Chocolate Festival is a traditional chocolate market – patisseries, restaurants and chocolate suppliers exhibit their products. Here you can, among other things, buy and taste products and watch demonstrations and chocolate competitions on stage – both for professionals and amateurs.
When: Friday 12/10 from 10:00 to 20:00, Saturday 13/10 and Sunday 14/10 from 10:00 to 18:00

Inauguration of Sweden’s new national stadium: Svenska Ögonblick on 27th October
A tribute to Sweden’s music to celebrate the opening of the new Friends Arena in Stockholm. Featuring The Hives, Icona Pop, Roxette, First Aid Kit, Loreen, Jump the Gun, Agnes, Moraeus, Danny Saucedo, Mustache, Sven-Ingvar, Rikard Wolff, Peter Mattei, Orphei Drängar, Sofia Jannok, Kristina (soloists from the Swedish Theatre in Helsinki set) and the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Hans Ek . At 90 minutes long, the show boasts the largest and most lavish stage production ever in Sweden, and gathers some of the country’s greatest artists, dancers and entertainers.

The Stockholm Jazz Festival – 1st to 7th October
Stockholm Jazz Festival is one of Sweden’s oldest festivals and one of Stockholm’s biggest events; it features 60 jazz concerts over 7 days. A must for any jazz fan.
When: Saturday 27th October at 20:00, but the audience must be seated by 19:30
Where: Kulturhuset, Konserthuset and Fasching Jazz Club
Cost: Each concert must be booked individually from the website. Prices range from 60 to 400 SEK
Dress from Downton Exhibition at Hallwylska Museum from 5th October
A new exhibition on the costumes from the popular period drama. It explores the costumes and lifestyle of the upper and lower classes of society during the early 1900s.
When: Opens on Friday 5th October and runs until 6th January. Open from 12:00 to 16:00 Tuesdays – Saturdays. Open until 19:00 Wednesday.

Shockholm 2012 – 27th October
Inspired by the grand Halloween Parades that takes place in New York annually, and attracts millions of viewers, here is the Stockholm version. The parade marches from Slussen, along Skeppsbron, and then reaches Kungsträdgården, which will be our final stop. At Kungsträdgården there will be food and entertainment. The parade is open for everyone who wishes to attend, but you must wear a Halloween costume. There will be a prize awarded for the best one!

The Stockholm Open: Tennis in the City – 13-21 October 2012
Since starting in 1969, the Stockholm Open has been played every year, with men’s singles and doubles competing on indoor hard courts. Watch the likes of Lleyton Hewitt and Jo-Wilfred Tsonga fight in out in our own beautiful city.
When: 13th to 23rd October. Check the schedule on the site for individual matches.
