What’s on and Where to Go: November

November marks the event we’ve been waiting for: the Stockholm Film Festival! But there’s many an exciting event going on in the city filling the dark days with light, sound, food, drink, dancing, sailing and even some horses. Here’s our top 10 events in November.

The Stockholm Film Festival – 7th to 18th November

This year’s program includes more than 170 film premieres from more than 50 countries. We eagerly look forward to 12 days full of quality cinema!  The festival opens with the much talked about political thriller Call Girl by Mikael Marcimain, while the central gala piece is Robert Zemecki’s Flight with Denzel Washington featuring as a drunken airline pilot. The big buzz of the year, The Master, by Paul Thomas Anderson will close the festival.

When: Wednesday 7th to Sunday 18th November

Where: Various cinemas throughout Stockholm

Cost: Each movie  must be booked individually from the website. Prices range from 50  to 180 SEK

Kungsträdgården’s Ice Rink Opens

The 50th anniversary of this central skating location. Glide around the centre of the city with either your own skates or hired ones at the rink itself. Finish up with a hot chocolate at the café, rinkside.

When: Tuesday 30th October to Sunday 3rd March

Where: Kungsträdgården

Cost: Free if you have your own skates! Adult Skate Hire: 50 SEK, Children’s Skate Hire 20 SEK

Gamex: The Computer Games Fair

For the 3rd year running, Kista is the meeting place for all who love console games and computer games, giving enthusiasts the chance to try out the hottest games and consoles, meet famous game developers and win competitions.

When: Thursday 1st November to Sunday 4th November from 10:00 to 20:00 Thurs to Sat, from 10:00 to 17:00 Sun

Where: Kistamässan, Arne Beurlings Torg 5, Helenlund

Cost:  Adult ticket for Saturday: 160 SEK; all other days: 140 SEK. Children from 4-10 years: 90 SEK. Buy tickets here.

Yoga and Dance Festival

Stockholm Yoga & Dance Festival offers a wide variety of workshops and sessions in different forms of yoga, dance and movement. The traditional and established technologies will be represented as well as the younger innovative forms. The level will be from beginners to those more experienced. We will offer lectures in the areas of health, nutrition, meditation and wellbeing and also present research on yoga and dance.

When: Friday 2nd November, 18:00 to Sunday 4th November, 18:00

Stockholm International Horse Show

The highlight of the year in the world of equestrian sports; in 2012, the Stockholm International Horse Show celebrates 20 years of show and competition. Competitions within a variety of sports (including dressage and showjumping) with top riders and horses are mixed with entertaining acts.

When: Thursday 29th November to Sunday 2nd December

Mitt Kök: Stockholm Food and Beverage Show

Sweden’s largest consumer fair for food and drink. The show is filled with lots of tastings, exhibitors, stage performances, food personalities, contests and samples – a must for anyone interested in food. Why not take the opportunity to eat a meal at Kockarnas Krog with menus from seven of the country’s leading chefs. New this year is The Pastry Café.

You can also buy a ticket for 3 of Stockholms fairs over the same weekend; Mitt Kök shares the weekend with Allt för Hälsan, the largest lifestyle fair for health and Winter Show, the place to draw inspiration for winter adventure.

Stockholm International Poetry Festival

The Stockholm International Poetry Festival is a glowing blend of poetry, music, dance, theatre and festivities. The festival was founded in 1997 by 10TAL’s editor in chief Madeleine Grive at the Royal Dramatic Theatre where the festival still is held each year. With this festival 10TAL wants to present the most creative and significant poetry being written in the world today. We believe in the need for poetry and dreams, that poetry shows us ways towards development and change.

When: Sunday 18th November, 15:00 and 19:00

Where: Klarascene, Kulturhuset (entrance Drottninggatan 34)

Attitude: STHLM

You as a visitors get to mingle with the fashion elite, be inspired by the latest of makeup and hair trends and have the opportunity to experience fashion shows which succeed each other with the most significant in the fashion industry.

SWEDEN PROG FEST 2012

Sweden’s Prog Fest 2012 takes this festival to the next level. Never before have so many prominent, top notch progressive rock bands been on the same line-up list in Sweden! You will experience the music from 10 bands, CD-DVD-merchandising sales and the unique environment in Bryggarsalen in the company of hundreds of dedicated prog rock fans. Prepare for a prog-rock-extravaganca-experience!

When: Friday 23rd to Saturday 24th November (Doors open at 18:00 each day)

Where: Bryggarsalen, Norrtullsgatan 12 N, Odenplan

Cost: 395 SEK for a one day ticket, 695 SEK for both days.

Christer Strömholm at Fotografiska

Ten years after Chris Strömsholms demise, Fotografiska presents CHR, a comprehensive retrospective of his oeuvre. It consists of over 150 photographs, both classic and never before revealed, and archival materials, objects, films, and sound recordings. Strömholm worked almost exclusively in black and white photography and recurring themes were death, life, private and friends. Strömholm photographed as he lived: with great integrity and great intensity.

When: ends on Sunday 25th November
