Chelas – There’s a New Mexican in Town

Located at the trendy Hornstull neighbourhood of Södermalm, at Verkstadsgatan 4,  you’ll find Chelas, Stockholm’s newest Mexican restaurant. Chelas opened its doors in July of 2019. The name comes from the Mexican slang word for beers and a phrase the Mexicans use when they want to socialise with friends and family: “Saca las chelas”. Literally translated it means “Bring out the beers”, but it can actually be better interpreted as “Let’s have some beers and hang out”.

Unique Stockholm Restaurants With A Great Wine List

The wine culture in Sweden is expanding, especially with the increase of vineyards in Skåne in the south of the country. In fact, 42% of all alcohol sales in Sweden consist of wine, and this is very different from brännvin, the traditional Swedish drink that translates as burn-wine. You can of course buy wine from the state owned Systembolaget. However, the only other place that you can buy wine and enjoy a glass is in licenced restaurants and bars that serve food. There are some great restaurants in Stockholm that unite their food and wine menu in perfect harmony, taking equal consideration to both.

Debaser Hornstulls Strand, Hornstulls strand, Stockholm, Sweden

Garageland kickes off in 2018 with a bunch of awesome live evenings on Debaser. First out is an evening with four of our favorite bands from the Swedish post-stage scene: The Knights, the True Moon, the Pacific Ocean and It’s For Us.

Free entrance before 20:00, then 150 SEK.
    Sat 6 Jan 19-03

DJs: Garageland + Rebecka Ljung (HYMN)

    RIDDARNA (23:00)
Three years have passed since Knight’s latest album Underground (2014), but now they’re finally back! The Knights’ new album “Another Time” is released on the always-as-hit record label Novoton. Here, dark postpunk blends with intimate indie and experimental rock in an obvious way. The result is a real hit, one of Sweden’s strongest Swedish recordings. “Another time” shines, pulses and vibrates, music that is both dreamy and brutal. After striking on the new record, Garageland looks forward to the first Stockholm rifle of the Knights for a very long time.

    TRUE MOON (22:00)
Many people know Karolina Engdahl and Tommy Tift from their punk band Won No, but when they make music like True Moon, they leave behind the punk behind them. True Moon is a brew on equal parts postpunk, new wave and darkwave. Music that is as dark and suggestive as it is catchy and dancing. The influences come from classic bands like Siouxsie and The Banshees, The Mission and Heart, but presented in a very modern way. Last year, True Moon released its brilliant debut album and the band is now working on the sequel.

    STILL THE SEA (21:00)
Every time we have seen the Pacific Ocean live in Garageland we have become completely floored. Intensity and energy are no different to the Swedish life scene. That is why we are extremely pleased that the Pacific Ocean will finally be on stage on one of our evenings. The Pacific Ocean is Elias Eriksson’s (from Boris & The Yeltsins) solo project, a razor sharp hybrid between postpunk and indiepop. Last year, the debit album was released, a disc packed with amazing songs like “The Beginning of an End”, “A Silent Minute,” “My Heart” and “Idiots.”

    IT’S FOR US (20:00)
Early this year, It’s For Us released its debut album on the always equally reliable record label, Luxury. The album has one leg in dark postpunk and the other in driven indie rock, and balances safely between cool shades and chaotic soundwalls. It’s For Us played at Garageland in connection with the album release and then showed what awesome live bands they are. Dense, dark and energetic music that does not teach to leave someone in the audience unmoved.

    — With Frederic (Lrt/Jenkins)

From deep introspective tunes to hysteric beats, but always very melodic, definitely electronic, and a bit melancholic. Sometimes taking the shape of an emotional roller-coaster with some of my favorite tracks I’ve been listening to again and again in the last years.

We will start by contemplative and soothing down-tempo tunes, move on towards more dance floor deep techno tracks, before closing the loop with introspective beats and melodies.

    — Key points of Free Flow:

    – Sober. Get high on life instead.
    – Dance. Challenge your movements.
    – Safe. Respect each others space and integrity this is our family ♥

(No Photos or videos on the dancefloor, to let people flow without worries)

    What’s Free Flow?
A weekly dance practice where all are students and all are teachers. Rather than learning steps, we develop our own rhythms and techniques to connect with and express ourselves.

Enter a safe and judgement free environment where, moving from a place of kindness and compassion, the only other boundaries are the ones you choose for yourself.

Come to connect, come to let out pent-up stress or emotions, or come to just be and let the music flow through.

Each session will follow a musical theme, and we welcome you to interpret that in any way, be it through movement, dress or attitude.

Free Flow is not for profit and donation-based. All proceeds go to the Node, and we encourage you to contribute to the community’s self-sustainability by donating monthly at http://syntheistnode.se/
    or by SWISH 123 023 10 68.

We look forward to flowing with you!

    Support: Albert af Ekenstam

In recent years, few bands have been felt as self-evident as Wolf Alice. With its mix of guitar-grunge and indie pop, the band has been a much needed energy player from an early sleepy music market. Wolf Alice has just released their second studio album – Visions of a Life – whose so far released singles testify to a band that has something really going on. Now Wolf Alice returns to Stockholm for a debut at Debaser Strand January 20th.

    INFORMATION:
Welcome to the big hug party in Stockholm to celebrate the international hugs day on January 21 in the very best flashmob style. Perhaps we can beat the world record in Group Hugging that is on 10554 hugs? But most importantly, it is clear that we meet and give each other plenty of warm, loving, hopeful and respectful hugs!

    * This is a so-called “flashmob”: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flashmob

    * For a little inspiration look here:

    WHEN?
January 21 at 14:00 (please feel free before)
    WHERE?
    Sergelstorg
    HOW?
Because it is a “spontaneous flashmob” with no arrangement, it will also be spontaneous and a bit messy. At 14:00 a small group of people will be in the middle of the square and start hugging. Immediately after that, everyone is welcome to “stream to” and continue the call. More info closer to the event!

Wetterling Gallery is welcoming Jim Dine to Stockholm!
With a career dating back to the 50s Jim Dines imagery is well known. The Heart, Pinocchio and Venus from Milo has followed him through the years and is for him a source of constant inspiration. He returns to these iconic images over and over again and find new ways and meanings. Dine uses the heart as a frame to explore the relation between texture, color and composition. Pinnocchio as a metaphor for art: how you can to create something living from a piece of wood or a flat empty canvas. And finally Venus, who let him reinvent an archetypic symbol. The exhibition presents both paintings and sculptures from the three themes.
Jim Dine lives and works in Paris, France and Walla Wall, USA. He has had around 300 solo exhibitions around the world an is represented in more than 80 museum collections.

Al Pitcher’s previous three solo tours have all been very popular successes, performing for sold out venues. The new standup show Sweden Syndrome is premiere October 27 in Norrköping and is described by Al as a love letter to his new homeland Sweden.

No one observes Swedes like Al Pitcher, with great warmth and astounding accuracy. His solo performances Fika, Påtår and Nääämen have given Al Pitcher a big and faithful audience. In the new show, Sweden Syndrome, Al turns the perspective and we get to know our new countryman and take part in his trip: from birth to England to childhood in New Zealand, then landing here, with a Swedish wife and two children.

Three of the most interesting hip hop artists of the Swedish scene will perform with separate concerts at Studion. Celebrating the show Folkmusik 2.0 – Swedish hiphop remixed with thunder and broke!

    JIREEL
The young rapper from Rågsved south of Stockholm has soon exploded as one of the country’s most noticed hip hop promises. Jireel debuted in November 2015 with the song “Here & Now” and has since continued with his crisp, modern style. Songs like “Like Me”, “Long Guy” and Superheater “Cataleya” made 2016 to his perhaps strongest year to date. “Snap” from recently released EP ‘Jettad’ is already mentioned as a milestone in Swedish hiphop – and when Jireel received the great honor to finish the entire Grammis Gala 2017, we could see a taste of a brilliant live artist. Now he is on a great tour of the country! Jireel has just begun.

    Sammy & Johnny Bennett
The video and song 5DF with Sammy & Johnny Bennett struck down as a bomb on the Swedish rap scene in spring 2016. The word about the pair of parents and the TU5EN collective from Gothenburg spread like a runaway. More and more have stood in the tribute choir for their amazing flow, rhythm and attitude since the brothers’ debut EP: Hundreds80 released last year.
At the Grammis Gala in 2017, Sammy & Johnny Bennett was well deserved in the category Newcomer of the Year. They are also nominated in the category “Hip Hop of the Year / RnB” on the P3 Gold Galaxy 2018 for their second EP ST.RECK released this year. Duon has this year Toured in Scandinavia with Lorentz and is currently working on his debut album. In anticipation of more details about the release of this, the audience can start by listening to the brothers’ latest single Proof.

    Jelly
On the 8th Sept, JËLLY released his debut Allting / Nothing. A EP about disappointment and sadness, but also about finding back to strength again. JËLLY is the first artist on Adam Tensta’s newly launched label JÄRN.

Afro-Cuban All Stars consists of thirteen of Cuba’s hottest musicians, active in leading bands like Orquesta Tropicana, Los Van Van and Sierra Maestra, assembled by band leader Juan de Marcos González – the man behind the Buena Vista Social Club.

He has long been honored in Latin America and Europe as the founding member of Cuba’s major son-revival band Sierra Maestra, but was noted primarily in the United States as creator, founder and musical leader of the Buena Vista Social Club.

Juan de Marcos is equally interested in highlighting Cuba’s brilliant young musicians as highlighting Cuba’s senior talent. Afro-Cuban All Stars not only have a genre-crossing ensemble, the group plays both classic Cuban styles like son and danzón and contemporary dance rhythms
