On the evening of November 5 Stockholm’s Cirkus venue was transformed into a vibrant celebration of Latin American music and culture as Colombian rock icons Aterciopelados graced the stage. The atmosphere was electric, with fans pouring into the venue eager to witness the duo’s unique blend of rock, pop, and traditional Colombian rhythms. Aterciopelados kicked off the concert with their classic hit El Estuche, instantly setting the tone for a dynamic and energetic show. The setlist was a well-curated journey through their decades-spanning discography, including beloved anthems like Bolero Falaz, Florecita Rockera, and Baracunatana. Newer tracks like Dúo and He Venido a Pedirte Perdón blended seamlessly with their older material, showcasing the band’s evolution while staying true to their roots. Each song was met with thunderous applause and a chorus of voices singing along, creating a magical synergy between Aterciopelados and their Swedish and Swedish-Latin fans.

The highlight of the night came when they performed Cosita Seria and Rompecabezas, two tracks that had the entire venue on its feet, dancing and waving arms in unison. The energy in the room was palpable, and even the band seemed moved by the enthusiasm of the crowd.

The stage design was as striking as the music. A backdrop of vibrant, Colombian-inspired art illuminated by colourful lights and psychedelic fluorescent colours created an immersive environment. Patterns reminiscent of Andean textiles and nature motifs gave the performance a unique visual identity, perfectly complementing the band’s aesthetic and message of harmony with nature and cultural pride.

The band members themselves brought their own flair, with lead vocalist Andrea Echeverri donning her signature eclectic and colourful attire. Her playful, magnetic stage presence was matched by bassist and co-founder Héctor Buitrago, whose calm demeanour and masterful musicianship anchored the night.

Undoubtedly one of the most unexpected and magical moments of the concert came when the band did a rendition of the famous song En La Ciudad De La Furia by the legendary Argentine band Soda Stereo, a song that Andrea Echeverri sang alongside the late Gustavo Cerati at that famous MTV unplugged concert in 1996. Remembering that moment, Andrea commented that even so many years later she still can’t believe that Gustavo Cerati chose her to sing this famous song. The audience at Cirkus flew to the moon and back when they heard this song live.

It wasn’t just the audience that was ecstatic. Aterciopelados visibly revelled in the warm reception from the Stockholm crowd. Andrea expressed her gratitude repeatedly throughout the night, at one point saying in Spanish, “¡Gracias, Estocolmo! No sabíamos que teníamos tantos amigos aquí,” (Thank you, Stockholm! We didn’t know we had so many friends here). The band’s joy was infectious, and their heartfelt connection with the crowd made the evening even more special.

“Estoy hecha un charco de amor profundo astronómico.” (I’ve been turned a puddle of deep astronomical love.)

From the first chord to the final encore, the Swedish audience demonstrated their deep appreciation for Aterciopelados’ music. Fans sang along passionately to every word, often drowning out the band themselves in a wave of collective euphoria. It was clear that the group’s universal themes of love, social justice, and environmentalism resonated deeply with attendees, transcending language and cultural barriers.

When the final notes of Canción Protesta rang out, the audience erupted into applause, calling the band back for an encore. The night ended on a high note with La Estaca, leaving the crowd buzzing with energy and emotion long after the band had exited the stage.

Aterciopelados’ performance at Cirkus was not just a concert—it was a celebration of music’s power to connect and inspire across cultures. The band’s dynamic energy, combined with the audience’s unwavering enthusiasm, made for a night that will linger in the memories of Stockholm’s music lovers for years to come. As the band bid farewell, the cheers and applause served as a clear message: Stockholm can’t wait to welcome Aterciopelados back.
