A total of 15 winners took home the awards from the 31st edition of the Stockholm International Film Festival. The coveted recognition for the Best Film was obtained by Berlin Alexanderplatz, directed by Burhan Qurbani. The lead actor of the movie, Welket Bungué, was awarded Best Actor for his portrayal of the lead character Francis. Mexican director Fernanda Valadez was awarded two Aluminium Horses in the categories Best Director and Best Debut for her film Identifying Features.

Identifying Features (Sin Señas Particulares) by Director Fernanda Valadez is awarded Best Director and Best Debut

Mexican director Michel Franco is presented with this year’s Stockholm Impact Award for his film New Order. The award was founded by Stockholm International Film Festival in collaboration with the City of Stockholm. With this prestigious award, the director receives 1 million SEK and a unique statuette designed by the famous artist Ai Weiwei.

Actor Lancelot Ncube is named Zalando Rising Star 2020. Director Jo Widerberg wins this year’s scholarship 1 km Film for her film Litegrann and an honorary mention was given to director Sara Klara Hellström for the film Tvagning. Katherine Waterston is awarded Best Actress for her role in The World To Come. Best Cinematography is awarded to Benjamín Echazarreta for the film Memory House. Kaouther Ben Hania is awarded Best Script for The Man Who Sold His Skin and the critically acclaimed documentary film Gunda, by Victor Kossakovsky, is awarded a Bronze Horse for Best Documentary. The film critics also had their say as the FIPRESCI-jury awarded the Korean film The Woman Who Ran, by Hong Sang-soo, Best Film.

FIPRESCI Award for Best Film

Best Film: The Woman Who Ran by Hong Sang-soo

 

The jury was chaired by star producer Patrik Andersson, who has produced The Serious Game (2016) and Midsummer (2019), among others, as the Stockholm International Film Festival’s jury chairman for the Stockholm XXXI Competition. Other members of the jury were the actress Eva Melander, and Isabella Eklöf, director and screenwriter, who debuted with the acclaimed film Holiday (2018).

An additional award, Wild Card, initiated by the Swedish Film Institute, was presented to Elsa Rosengren and Sebastian Johansson Micci. They received 400 000 SEK each for development of their first feature film.
