Festival-filled August brings the music outdoors

Who else has their calendar full of events for August? Once again we can expect an amazing month when it comes to live music and festivals in Stockholm and nearby. We’ve put together our best picks of outdoor music events you should not miss this month.

Gröna Lund concerts 

Gröna Lund has filled their whole season with lots of concerts, which can all be seen at the very reasonable price of 240 SEK for their Green Card. There’s been plenty on offer already and there’s still more during August, including Maja Francis, Jill Johnson and Iggy Pop.  See the full listings here.

Gröna Lund also hosts the weekly musical entertainment show Sommarkrysset, which is broadcast live on TV4. It’s on every Saturday this month, and our best pick would be Saturday 13th August, when the amazing UK singer Dua Lipa makes an appearance.

Nynäskalaset

This festival takes place at the beautiful Svandammsparken right by the guest harbour in Nynäshamn, about 50 km south of Stockholm. Beside music from quite a range of genres the festival promises food and drinks from local celebrity chefs. Saturday’s family friendly entertainment during the earlier part of the day has free entrance and you can catch kids’ favorites Panetoz and Sean Banan among others then. Otherwise the main attractions include Miriam Bryant, Maja Francis and Danny Saucedo on Friday the 5th and Molly Sandén and The Hooters on Saturday the 6th.

Kulturfestivalen 

Stockholm’s annual Culture Festival fills the city with all kinds of cultural activities and this year’s special theme is France. Some of the most interesting musical acts on the main stage at Gustav Adolfs Torg include the French genre-bending Caravan Palace on the 17th, Ethiopian superstar Aster Aweke on the 19th and Swedish indie legends Bob Hund on the 20th. We are STHLM

Parallel with the Culture Festival, the younger Stockholmers once again get their own festival at Kungsträdgården. That is where the youngsters are expected to gather to enjoy the latest in music on the last weekend before school starts. The Rockbjörnen award show on the opening night (16th August) promises to be a big party. Other artists to watch out for are Swedish reggae’s reigning queen Syster Sol on the 17th, the slightly mad but very cool Death Team on the 18th, the rising British R’n’B singer MNEK on the 19th and the very street-smart and totally amazing rapper Linda Pira, also on the 19th.

Hadirajafestivalen

This festival is on its second year and takes place in Knivsta, about 50 km north of Stockholm. The line-up this year has the raw live energy of The Sounds, the party anthems of Panetoz and the pretty amazing pop princess ISA.

Rix FM Festivalen 

The radio channel Rix FM has made it a tradition to tour the country with their summer festival, bringing along both Swedish and international artists who get to showcase their talents with a song or two each. The Stockholm festival’s line-up includes YLC’s favorite Miriam Bryant, as well as Sabina Ddumba, Molly Sandén, Danny Saucedo and Eurovision heartthrob Frans. There are also international names like Poland’s pop starlet Margaret, Canada’s reggae-stylin’ Magic!, the American duo Timeflies and Britain’s Jonas Blue. It’s all free and there are other activities in the park already from 12 o’clock.

Popaganda 

The Popaganda festival once again takes over the Eriksdalsbadet outdoor pool area and promises to extend the summer a bit more, even though people will be back to school and work by the time of the festival. The festival always brings out many of the top Swedish artists together with some interesting international ones. The line-up this year is topped by British acts like FKA TwigsYears & Years, Belle & Sebastian and Shura. Norway’s Susanne Sundfør is definitely one to watch and the interesting Swedish artists on the bill include Markus KrunegårdElias and Little Jinder.

Kringelfestivalen

This free festival takes place at the centre of Södertälje, about 35 km south of Stockholm. There are plenty of activities around town, but the music programme concentrates on Marenplan. The hightlights of the programme include Miriam Bryant at 22:00 on the 26th, Danny Saucedo at 22:00 on the 27th and Ace Wilder at 15:00 on the 28th.
