Finding meaningful work and creating a network can be challenging when you first arrive in Sweden, yet it is one of the most vital things you can do to set up your new life abroad. One of the best ways to get involved in the community, to meet new people, understand a new culture and make a difference in the world, could be to volunteer with one of the many non-profit organizations in Sweden. Through giving your time to local and international projects, with one of the fantastic organizations listed below, you could gain many benefits to help your professional development in Sweden. Finding a volunteer placement is not always easy in Sweden, as many organizations do not accept non-Swedish speaking volunteers. We have contacted a wide range of these organizations so we can provide you with a list of those that are more than happy to receive help from English speaking volunteers.
Akvo Foundation www.akvo.org/
Akvo creates open source web and mobile software and builds networks of skilled partners that can change the way development aid is allocated and reported. This is important, because it improves the way projects are implemented in some of the poorest parts of the world, making them more effective, efficient, sustainable and visible.Volunteer needs: If you are technically minded and are able to install Linux servers, configure software and build programmes in Python or PHP, then this may be for you! Akvo.org’s technical team are looking for volunteers to help improve the way development aid is communicated to a larger audience. The tasks you could help us with include: building our metrics board; installing and configuring data visualisation tools; configuring our web traffic analysis tools; and participating in testing the Akvo RSR system, which is an online service that we are building.
