February is a short month, but no less action-packed for that. Take the opportunity to teach your child to skate on the ice and maybe participate in a race yourself at Vikingarännet. If that sounds too chilly, we’ve plenty of indoorsy activities listed from ‘danceoke’ to concerts to exhibitions. Don’t worry, we’ll be doing a specific article just on things to do for Sportslov; these are our top 10 things to do apart from at the half-term break.
Last Chance to see the National Museum
The National Museum is closing down on the 4th February for long-term renovations until 2017. Do not miss your last chance to participate in their family Sunday for crafting!
On Saturday, the theme is Visible and Invisible: What happened when King Gustav III was to be crowned? We see what can happen when the artist Gustav Pilo took the king’s portrait upon royal orders. In the studio we paint layer upon layer of thin and thicker acrylic paint on cardboard panels.
On Sunday, the theme is cool gadgets at the dinner table, so-called “Conversation Pieces“, which we make with scrap metal, paint and glitter.

Family Sunday at Arkitekturmuseet: Knitting House
We explore knitting patterns and materials and build house models in our studio. You will be able to work on knitting frames, cloth dolls and needles. Those that are too small to work can work with frottage and become familiar with how different materials look and feel. We will start with a short tour of our exhibition Knitting House and then start to build our own models, which you can take home.
We will be geting our inspiration from the exhibition, which was conducted by a group of women living in the same type of apartment, all with very different backgrounds, education, and life stories. Every detail of the then-empty 82-square-meter apartment has been measured, mapped and then knitted into a slightly reduced copy of the former home (75%). Even the traces of life from those who lived there a long time ago – wallpaper, stains, scratches and stickers – are all lovingly reproduced in knitting.
When: Sundays through February from 13:00 to 15:00
Where: Arkitekturmuseet, Exercisplan 4, Skeppsholmen (T-bana: Kungsträdgården; Bus 65 to stop: Arkitekturmuseet)

Faith, Hope and Love: an exhibition of sailor tattoos
What is a sailor tattoo? The exhibition places the specimens in the centre of a much wider argument. If the tattoo gives the skin a voice, what did sailors want to be their own skin to say? The Maritime Museum has a collection of about 170 tattoo models from 1920s and 1930s. It contains nautical stars, full-rigged ships, exotic animals, naked and clothed women, swallows, roses, anchors … and much more. A small number of models have been used sparingly in exhibitions or as illustrations in books about tattoos. Most have never been shown to an audience.
When: Mondays closed; Tuesdays to Sundays – 10:00 to 17:00
Where: Sjöhistoriska museet, Djurgårdsbrunnsvägen 24 115 27 Stockholm
Age group: 4-12 year olds
