Yes, it’s true. We’re going to do it. We’re not the first, but we still think it’s daring of us. OK, take a deep breath. Pause. It has to be done. We are going to mention the ‘C’ word. Not the dirty one. The expensive one. That’s right, Christmas.
For those who want to remain in denial of the looming day, skip this next line.
Christmas is less than two months away!
To be fair, for some this seems like ages away, and they won’t know what I’m doing nattering away about this festive event already. But for other people, like me, who can’t stand the Christmas lines, like to plan early, and most importantly don’t like, no scratch that, refuse to pay the astronomical Swedish retail prices (especially when they could of got the same item in their home country for a third of the cost) we’ve come up with some simple things you can do to save a buck, avoid the chain stores, and give you some hints on getting prepared for Christmas before you’ll have to fight your way through the shopping malls and department stores.
Each week from now to Christmas, look out for our weekly DYI blog.
Make Your Own 3 Tier Cookie Tray
With Christmas quickly approaching this is perfect to give as a gift or use as a party favour. It was simple to make, and I mean really simple to make, takes less than 10 minutes to put together, costs less than 50sek, looks beautiful and if you purchased in your local design shop, it would probably cost over 300Sek.
Supplies Needed:
- 3 plates or bowls in various sizes. I recommend you go to one of Stockholm’s many secondhand shops and find a few you like. I picked these three up for 10sek each at my local Stockholm Statsmission
- 2 snaps glasses or candle sticks
- Clear rubber cement. I use Scotch brand ‘Superstart lim: Luja Yleisliima’ which I picked up for 35sek at my local craft shop
How To:
- Wash the dishes so they are smudge and dust free
- using a ruler, measure the center of the plate.
- Glue the dishes to the top of the glasses/candlesticks with contact cement.
- Wait at least 6 hours until the glue is dry.
- Feel happy you made a beautiful, inexpensive and sustainable Christmas gift.

I am making one right now! It’s going to be 4 story cake tier made from porcelain plates.
Hold your fingers and snaps glasses!
